Alrty then

Alryty then , hav u eva noticed how i like to blog after particularly awesom nyts out ? well now i hav , and i guess u now notice ? maybe? well anyway, tonight was awesome.

to start the evening a few friends and i went to the baylor version of the hss cultural show which was pretty cool, but ours is better. had this awesome fat potatoe samoosa, sooooo good. The isss (baylor version of hss= indian subcontinent students association) then had this after party at a club in waco. well i'd never been out in waco n was like ok yes, lets do it. good idea, very good idea. it was so much fun.

recently God has been telling me how i'm called to party ministry which sometimes involves prayer , or dancing or cleaning up vomit . and 2nyt was a dance nyt so i shook my biscuit, keeping it as modest as i could, thinking of my relationship with Christ. and sumtyms it didnt work out so good and other tyms it did. But the reason tonyt was so good was because 4 the first time when some1 said u dance really well i turned around and told them that i danced for Jesus, that i was ther to let them kno that Jesus loves people who party too.

it was great. The Lord has been so faithful thus far in my exchange , taking me from strength to strength through his awesomeness, its amazing.
i love you , goodnight

Spring Break

Righty oh , im bad at this , this has been established , but this is a sorta summary of my super awesome Spring Break. I went on this Baylor sponsored Civil Rights tour and its was super cool , this is the blog i posted on the trips blog and if you want to read the rest of trips participants accounts you can check it out on baylorcivilrightstour.blogspot.com

Wow, ok. So it's over and I'm in shock and experiencing signs of withdrawal, I miss all of you guys. Um, this is a sort of summary of my trip and how I felt along the way

Day1

Today we visited Little Rock High School and I didn't feel anything. I didn't feel any major sorrow, any shock or surprise, I just didn't feel anything. I was like shame (which means I'm sorry in South African English), spit, but then it was like eh, oh well. I guess I'm desensitized, having grown up in South Africa, in a time quite similar to the era just after the Civil Rights movement. So it isn't to strange for me to have been the first black family in an area, or for stones to be thrown at me because I'm black.

When we went to the Dunbar museum, what struck me then was that most of these people looked white and I was like, Oh.
Another product of South Africa is that because people were graded on how close to white they were, I find it difficult to accept that people who are almost white and people who are black can be treated the same way.

Day 2
Worship at the historically black church was such a culture shock to me, though I'm black , because I'm South African , I'd never experienced something like that before. Lunch in Memphis was pretty good; I ate catfish for the first time and discovered that it tastes much better when you eat it with your hands.

The National Civil Rights museum was pretty legit and I really enjoyed our awesome tour guide. For me, it was the first time I'd heard a lot of the information and I thought it was exciting and new.

My favourite part about Memphis though, has to be Beale Street. We had an absolute ball there when we were given free time and I feel it really allowed me to start connecting with the people I was travelling with. We danced and sang karaoke at what must have been the most talented karaoke night in America; the people who sang were phenomenal. We also had some of our own singing notes I never thought I'd hear.

Day3
We were in Oxford and wow, it was intense. This was where our group (group 3) experienced The Heated Debate, it was intense, but that one has its own blog. The rest of Oxford wasn't as intense though and it’s a beautiful little town with ridiculously overpriced clothing stores and a really fun bookshop chain thing. It was great. They also had this really cool diner called Ajax where I deep fried eggplant which was pretty cool.
On the way out of Mississippi we stopped at this gas station and I had a conversation with the attendant and when I asked about racism, she said it was still very prevalent and that people often refused to be served by her and that in fact someone had lied to her manager that very day because she was black. When I said we were going to Alabama she said she was sorry, as it was worse there...
Day 4
Birmingham, Alabama was amazing the Civil Rights Institute was my favourite of all the museums we went to, and we went to quite a few. The other cool part of Birmingham was free time when we walked all over the city, it was amazing. We had this really awesome group with Syntche, Rachana, Chey, Lei, Lauren and I. We walked down the historical black district into these cool barbershops and just talked to people. We walked into this one ghetto fabulous store selling everything from fake hair to grillz, it was awesome. I met this guy at the store and asked him about the race situation in Alabama and he told me, how he felt his race had affected the quality of his education, how he'd felt entering the army was his only way to escape becoming a lay about at home, how at one point in time he'd worked 16hours a day to make $900 a week and how he was moving to Tennessee to escape because maybe change would come faster then.
Day 5
Selma was so cool, oh my gosh, we did this tour of Selma and walked across the bridge, it was great. The best part however, was when we went on this slavery simulation. It was phenomenal. It was one of the first times I really connected with the struggle of America's African American population. It just changed my perspective. It made me realize that we need to start racial reconciliation in South Africa now, because if we don't in forty years we'll have what America has. Where most of the majority are totally disconnected from the situation and its affects are something the minority groups feel daily.
Day 6
Montgomery was a lot intense. We went to four museums in one day, it was crazy. However, the first museum, the Southern Poverty Law Center was a real eye opener to the kind of discrimination going on today and to the forgotten heroes of the Civil Rights movement. Their wall of tolerance however, was what really challenged me because I didn't know whether to sign it or not. As someone who has faced a lot of discrimination, it's one of my main goals in life to learn to value people regardless of their age, race, gender or sexual orientation. But I was afraid to sign the wall because I was afraid people would take it to mean that I was in support of things I don't agree with. I believe that people should be allowed to do what they would like as long as it doesn't harm anyone else, but that doesn't mean I will support it or be in favour of it. So I didn't sign the wall and I'm still not sure whether that was the right choice or not.
Day 7
Was a rather interesting day, we had a bus accident (someone scrapped the bus whilst trying to change lanes) so our panel discussion for that day was cancelled. But we did get to have an awesome night in New Orleans eating benets and celebrating as bears when Baylor won their basketball games.
Day 9
This was a real eye opener because I didn't believe this could happen in America. I couldn't believe that 3years after Katrina, people could be living in a hollowed out shell of a house and that the poorer areas could be left relatively unchanged since the disaster.
It was awesome to be able to do a little something, but it made me feel sad to leave when there was still so much left to do.
On a brighter note though NO was fun for so many other reasons. I got to eat an amazing Oyster po'boy which is basically a deep fried oyster sandwich, one word = Awesome. Our planned night out in NO went a little pear shaped though, because it was pouring and we sort of ended up walking for a mile and a half going to a place we didn't even end up going. But then we danced in the rain, had benets and coffee for dinner and danced on Bourbon St. picking up beads and roses in true NO style. It was a good night.
Day 9
The last day of our trip was where I realised just how awesome it had had been and just how much I didn’t want to leave, but hey. The highlights of the day where when we stopped at Rachana's parents Shipley's and they gave us free reign of the doughnut shop allowing us to get whatever we wanted. Thank you so much Mr. & Mrs. Chhin. As well as this really awesome contemplative worship session that C Mac led us in.
The most awesome parts of the trip though were things like playing catchphrase til the early hours of the morning and having awesome conversations with people I would never have met any other way. This trip changed my life, it’s been amazing and taught me so much about myself and others, changing my world view . . .

the last 2 weeks

Ok so my friends say I have very negative American views ,but that's just not true-ish. I sorta like America and I AM havin this AWESOME time with my American friends.

Apart from that I've also been a pretty bad blogger ,but I will say that the work is crazy cos i have like a crazy work schedule with atleast 14hours of homework which i think is ridiculous , but hey
The highlights of the last 2 weeks
last week i went to this brazillian students party at school and i learnt capoeira and the brazilian electric slide ( uh uh ).
Um then this weekend we went to Houston , hello H-town, very very cool . We stayed with my friend Lolly and her mum so cool. we had this amazin cheese and wine at home and then we made pannekoeke dat ons het geeet met cinnamon , suur-lemoen en suiker ( uh uh?) vry cool.
We also went to the zoo and awesome vintage shoppie places . i realised however, that i don't really like zoo's because the animal's look so sad.

i think the thing that will probably have the most impact on me was that I went to Joel Osteen's church and it was so sad because it was like a whole lotta of counterfeit christianity and like 10000 people believing in it.
but ya
i love you guys and i miss u

after that i went to commongrounds, this really cool coffee place where this org that i support , falling whistles was having an awareness day ( google falling whistles , its intense) . So i sorta landed there and happened to stay there most of the day listenin to awesome music , painting stuff and buying fairtrade goods, i loved it.

Welcome to the Party

Now this is a lil soon ,but last night was so intense that i just had to tell you.

So i was invited to my first American House party and i was like kool , yeah , but i was also lazy to go cos i'd jus failed my first quiz (not fun ) {very dif style of testing}. but any way, the intos(internationals / exchange students) wer like chipo u have to come n i was like ok fine even tho i didnt kno the girl whose party it was.

so we get there n we're like whoo hoo, party party n every1's like , do u want a drink n im like no , no drinks 4 me n people r like no u sure and im like ya. bt they're like ok , this 1s a lil wierd.

N lo n behold , who should stop by the party, but the PoPo (Police) n they're there to bust underage drinking, it was so exciting , like an american movie. They had uniforms and everything

So i had to take a breathelyzer test and um ya it came up 0.00 for alcohol which is cool. I kinda feel a lil bit vindicated 4 my no alky stance now cos wen the cops came i had nothing to fear cos i knew i hadnt done anything bad. some people gt tickets and hav to appear in court n a friend was fined $200 and this other guy 's gonna hav a warrant 4 his arrest because he lied to the popo.

Um so ya , this is one those cool days when the benefits of followin the bible are visible to every1 " you shall obey the laws of the land in which you live ". Cos imagine wat would have hapened if i'd been drinkin n i had to tell my rentals , i now hav an American criminal record ( not fun).

Party people

so yayness im happy n havin fun in America and these are some pics of the party.

Week 3/4 - Sorry

Hey all, sorry this is delayed , but life has been crazy and God's been doing amazing things in my life.
One of the most amazing, was last week I went to a conference called World Mandate , where God shared with me His purpose for my life. It's amazing , because I finally have some direction as to what exactly I'm to do with myself and that is to help be a mother to lost children and to make world changing Godly policy by working with UNICEF, its amazing.

but in the process of God revealing His plan for me , He's started to call me out on the issues i have in my life that will hold me back and one big 1 is Pride. Those of u who know me can probably agree that this is true , so friends i'm humbling myself and asking you to pray for me that i may be truely humbled , i'm asking you to call me out when i'm prideful or selfish. Because that is the only way we can grow as a family in Christ is by being completely honest with each other.
this is a lil scary and disarming 4 me , but obviously God has a plan.

Another cool thing that has happened , is that an opportunity has arisen 4 me go to India in the summer on an all expenses paid mission trip. By all expenses paid I mean that God has plan to pay and I'm not quite sure what it is yet. so would you please pray 4 me, that God would make a way if it's His will.

Onto other cool things, on tuesday in class this guy was just like "Hi is there any1 who would like to know about the love that Jesus has for them please talk to me after class." that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool cos i was like wow, that would never ever happen at Rhodes

Baylor does however hav this wierd closed minded culture its strange like i heard someone say " i suspect he's a liberal, i have my suspicions ". Oh n guess wat , George Bush was at the women's basketball game ,but i didn't get to see him cos i was at church , c'est tres interessant non? He also might be coming to give a class at baylor.

My stove also burst into flames the other day when i was cooking, not so fun but interesting.

And grahamstonians, if u think our weather is bad , if has nothing on Texas , the other day the min was 3 C and the max was 27 C , that's just crazy. and i had my first half ice day, wer class was delayed till 10 cos of icy roads , unfortunately my first class was 11 so i didnt really get the benefit of it. bt ya

ok i hav a quiz that i need to study for. so bubye
lovies
